7 simple ways to personalize the service for your loved one

Music
Whether recorded or live, music can add extra meaning to a service. Consider the kind of music your loved one enjoyed, loved, and was important to them, and/or music you think would be of comfort to those attending.

Special Readings
Readings from poets, authors and a variety of spiritual traditions are wonderful additions. If there were favorite quotes or passages which were especially meaningful to your loved one, including those adds a personal touch. Note: when I work with you to plan a service, I provide a list of comforting and inspirational readings which could be included in a service.

Photographs, Videos
Framed photographs, and photo boards of a loved one’s life are often displayed. Increasingly, family and friends are also creating videos and powerpoint presentations to highlight the life of their loved one.

Display Things They Loved
Gather and display items that reflect your loved one’s hobbies and interests. Make small cards that explain the significance of the items.

Location
Choose a location that you feel is fitting for your loved one. Locations can vary from a funeral home, memorial park, cemetery, columbarium or mausoleum, to a favorite restaurant, a community center, private home, a beautiful outdoor setting, military cemetery or on a boat for a scattering at sea.

Speakers
The words that are spoken, and the special people who say them, can make a service memorable. Family, friends, and coworkers may want to deliver a eulogy, tell stories about your loved one’s life, read poetry, etc. If there are no time constraints, I often suggest we build in a time to “open the floor” for others to speak.

Story of Your Loved One’s Life Journey
When I officiate at a service, I write and share the story of your loved one’s life journey – who and what they loved, significant life events, interests, and how they will be remembered. To do this, I bring skills from past experience as Public Relations executive, coordinator of corporate events and writer.
